Description:
Abstract:
In June, 1988, the U.S. Forest Service began digitizing its Primary Base Series (PBS) maps as part of the National Geographic Information system (GIS) Plan via an initiative carried out by the Forest Service Geometronics Service Center (GSC) in Salt Lake City, Utah. The resulting data files are known as Cartographic Feature Files (CFF). These files provide a standard template for the registration of resource data layers in GIS. PBS maps are developed from the (USGS) 7.5-minute topographic map series (scale = 1:24000) and are revised regularly. Digitizing was carried out under contract from 1988 through 1993. In the GYA, the original USGS source maps are constructed to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. PBS maps contain the following information: (1) Transportation Features; (2) Drainage courses and surface water locations; (3) Political and administrative boundaries; (4) The Public Land Survey System; (5) USFS and other land ownership (status); (6) Other Cultural features. In 1997, the University of Wyoming joined and processed hydrographic features from the CFF files made available to them through the USFS. The product of this effort covers much of the western portion of the state of Wyoming, and the Greater Yellowstone as well. Quads of interest to Grand Teton National Park were acquired from this secondary source and further processed for local interests.
Purpose:
This coverage was developed to meet the spatial analytical needs of both Grand Teton National Park and those of the surrounding area known as the Greater Yellowstone Area. To these ends, data were developed in conjunction with neighboring agencies, while addressing special needs at the local level. Each coverage is intended to meet the fundamental needs of investigators and individuals for a seamless Greater Yellowstone Area theme upon which project specific details of any particular investigation may be placed. Agencies and individual investigators may use this data to present hydrographic features on any compatible coverage for reference or analysis.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
No ground accuracy assessment was conducted for the database. Informal attribute assessment and correction was conducted by UW using USGS 7.5' series quadrangles and Digital Orthophotography Quarter Quadrangle (DOQQ) images for the Jackson Hole area. Approximately 80% of attribute information was obtained from the original CFF developed through Geometronics Service Center in Salt Lake City, Utah in cooperation with the National Forest Service. This data was checked for accuracy by comparing coding with USGS 7.5' quadrangle linework. Approximately 20% of linework and attribute information was obtained from USGS 7.5' quadrangles.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Polygon and arc topology present. All features labelled appropriately
Completeness_Report:
Hydrography linework and attributes are complete for 184 7.5' quadrangles and for portions of 13 additional quadrangles. Stream and lake attributes are available for these classification systems: CFF, DLG (Major/Minor) and WWRC. Hydrographic feature names are available for all USGS coded streams and lakes. Full coverage is available from the University of Wyoming. This coverage contains those quadrangles of interest in the Jackson Hole area.

Process_Description:
University of Wyoming obtained CFF files covering the area of interest from the Bridger-Teton National Forest during March, 1996. Preliminary work had been done at the forest, and University personnel furthered the processing by edmatching and editing as required. These changes were made using USGS 7.5 series quadrangles. Attributing arcs and polygons was done using both CFF and USGS information sources. Names of streams and lakes were derived from USGS 7.5' quadrangles. Stream direction was not checked/corrected. Details of these procedures may be obtained from the U. of Wyoming. (ftp.sdvc.uwyo.edu). Dataset development: Kevin Toohill, Wyoming Water Resources Center. (WWRC)

Process_Description:
Data of interest to Grand Teton National Park was obtained from the University of Wyoming ftp site (ftp.sdvc.uwyo.edu). Data were received in 1:100,000 quads (Yellowstone National Park South, Jackson Lake, and Jackson). These were appended, clipped to the extent described, and projected at NAD27 in UTM Coordinates for local compatibility. The following additions were made to the UW design: (1) Linework for the features "Glaciers/Snowfields" were extracted from the original CFF files and joined to the coverage. (2) Hydrocode definitions (Hydrodef) were supplied to define code values. For cff code values (CFF#), corresponding attributes (DEF#) were derived from the cited source and added to supply corresponding definition information.
